Underground Utility Locating Miami Beach
GPR Scanning Services, LLC completed a utility locating project in Miami Beach. A contractor was renovating an existing hotel near Washington Street in downtown Miami Beach. The original building plans indicated a possible water line running from the street under the building to the hotel kitchen area at the back of the property. During the scanning, GPRSS located an unknown fire line in addition to the known water line. By locating the fire and water lines, the contractor could dig, cap and re-route the lines to accommodate the renovation plans.
A 400MHz GPR antenna was used to scan for the underground utilities. The radar unit is pushed over the area and the results are displayed on a computer screen for interpretation. The 2 metallic lines were located approximately 1′-2′ below the surface. Ground penetrating radar can locate underground metallic pipes, very easily given it’s highly reflective nature. The GPR unit can be used over grass, gravel, concrete and asphalt surfaces to assist in locating underground utilities beneath.
Along with the GPR service, electromagnetic induction was used to verify the buried lines. A 33kHz frequency signal tone was placed directly on the exposed lines and then connecting to a utility transmitter. The 33kHz frequency signal tone can be located by using a utility wand set at the same 33kHz frequency. The utility wand can also be used to locate live power, communication and gas lines. Empty PVC lines can be located by placing a metallic fish tape inside and direct connecting to the utility transmitter.
The buried utilities are marked directly on the surface with spray paint along with approximate depths. GPRSS provides utility locating for underground projects throughout South Florida including Aventura, Boca Raton, Coral Gables, Coral Springs, Deerfield Beach, Fort Lauderdale,Miami, Pompano Beach, Sunrise and West Palm Beach.
