Locating Underground Utilities in Davie, Florida
GPR Scanning Services, LLC recently completed a project at a local church. The project consisted of locating underground utilities prior to installing a new digital sign in Davie, Florida. To power the new sign, the church would need to trench approximately 150′ from an existing electrical panel. In order to proceed with digging, the church required utility locating services to make sure that no utilities would be damaged during construction. The technician was able to mobilize to the site to complete the private utility locate. To complete the locating service, the technician established a scan boundary of approximately 20′ wide by 150′ long. The technician used a 400MHz ground penetrating radar unit partnered with a utility wand to complete the underground locating. The gpr unit is capable of reaching depths up to 8′-10′ in South Florida. It can detect buried metallic and PVC piping and utilities such as electric, communications, water, gas, irrigation, sewer, storm, steam and chiller lines. The utility wand detects live power and can be used to connect directly to exposed utilities. The transmitter can emit a frequency tone onto the exposed pipe or wiring and the utility wand can locate the buried underground utility. Utility locating should always be completed utilizing both gpr and electromagnetic induction by use of a utility wand/transmitter. The located utilities were marked directly on the surface using spray paint as approved by the APWA for Uniform Color Coding. The uniform color code allows for the use of identifiable colors for each specific utility. With all the utilities marked out, the church was able to proceed with the plans to safely begin trenching. The technician did recommend calling Sunshine 811 to verify no public utilities would interfere with the project.
